Coronavirus Protection: Things everyone should know to stay protected!

Started from December 2019 from Wuhan, Hubei province, China, the novel coronavirus has become a global threat. The emergence and spreading of this virus are so rapid that it has become a pandemic in just 2 months. Popularly known as COVID-19 or as named by the World Health Organization (WHO) SARS CoV-2 the virus has infected more than 940,000 individuals across the globe. More than 47,500 deaths have been reported in 180 countries till the start of the April month in 2020.

How coronavirus spread?

Transmission of Coronavirus: The COVID-19 is transmitted by the person-to-person phenomenon. If a person comes in close contact (<6 ft.) with a person carrying the virus (already infected) or inhales the droplets of the COVID-19 patient the other person start to experience the symptoms of this disease.
‘Fomite infection’ is another way this virus can spread, let us understand what are fomites; these are the surface or objects that can be contaminated with the virus and if a healthy person touches the fomite, then touches eyes or nose or mouth he/she can get infected with COVID-19 virus.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus?

Following are the symptoms of coronavirus and these appear after 2-14 days a person comes in contact with the virus.

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

These symptoms become even fatal and lead to death if become severe.

Coronavirus: When you need to visit a doctor?

If the following coronavirus emergency warning signs appear there is a need for medical attention.

  • Trouble in breathing
  • Bluish lips or face
  • Pain and pressure in the chest

How to protect yourself from coronavirus?

The first step of protecting yourself from coronavirus infection is often cleaning or washing your hands properly with soap and clean running water. In absence of water use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol by rubbing it evenly on hands.

Maintain social distancing: Avoid close contact with people, even stay home stay safe. Abide by the rules of government and avoid going out as much as possible.

While coughing or sneezing always cover your mouth and nose, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. The best way to prevent the virus from spreading is by avoiding infection as much as possible.

Clean and disinfect the surface of objects regularly. Clean the surfaces with soap water and disinfect using alcohol solution (>70 %) or bleach solution as follows:


  • 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water
  • OR
  • 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

Bottom line:

As there are no vaccine or sure-shot medications available for the COVID-19, avoid infection as much as possible. Stop going out of homes, maintain social-distancing completely. Shop for as minimal things as possible, never hide the symptoms, visit a doctor immediately if symptoms are experienced. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap water, avoid fomite contact, and regularly disinfect the surface at homes. Take a step back and eliminate corona.
